Milwaukie, Oregon: Rocket Comics, a division of Dark Horse Comics, 2004. 1st ed. 8vo, wrps, unpag., color illus. New Staplebound Wraps Gr. 7-10. Professional Mexican wrestler El Zombo Fantasma is having a bad day. Fresh from his last fight, he suddenly finds himself hurtling toward Purgatory after being murdered by a mysterious assassin. Angelo, his heavenly caseworker, informs him that in order to avoid hellfire, he must return to Earth to protect foul-mouthed Belisa Montoya. It seems that 10-year-old Beli is the reincarnation of an Incan goddess who has been stalked through the centuries by Los Mascaras Negros, tribal baddies who want the goddess' power for themselves. It's no surprise who wins the day in this typical superhero graphic novel, but it is tremendous, pile-driving fun getting there. El Zombo, in all his Wolverine--on--supersteroids glory, explodes off every page with a frenetic energy that is only rivaled by Beli's speedy trash talk. The computer coloration is lush, and the violence is so over the top that any WWF-savvy teen will scarcely bat an eyelash. (Review by Jennifer Hubert of the ALA) (Item ID: 154676)
