La Plata was founded by Dardo Rocha in 1882 and designed by the rationalist urban planner Pedro Benoit as an urban center with a central park and two main diagonal avenues. The photos depict La Plata as early as 32 months after the first stones were set and many buildings pictured are still under construction. An engraved plan of the city is also included, as we all as an illustration of the ceremony to mark the laying of the first stone of what was intended to be the new capital of the province of Buenos Aires.
