Getulio Vargas, 1930-1954
Dear friends and colleagues,

Our collection of Brazilian keeps growing and growing! This week we are offering a selection of Brazilian titles related to infamous Brazilian president Getulio Vargas, his Estado Novo and political conditions under his leadership.

Getulio Vargas is arguably the most controversial and influential figures in 20th century Brazilian politics. Born in 1883, he acted as president (or, according to many, dictator) from 1930 to 1945, and again in 1951 until his death in 1954. In 1937, before the scheduled general election of 1938, Vargas drafted a new constitution which gave him power over the the legislative and judicial branches of Brazil's government, establishing the period known as the "Estado Novo," which lasted until 1945. This period was characterized by oppressive political restrictions, economic nationalism and industrialization.

In 1951, Vargas was democratically reelected to serve as president. A scandal--known as the "Rua Tonelero"--involving an attempted assassination on political adversary Carlos Lacerda led to Vargas' suicide in 1954.
