Poet, soldier and Catholic priest, Juan de Castellanos was born in Spain in the first half of the sixteenth century and spent much of his life in what is now Colombia. His epic poem "Elegias de Varones ilustres de Indias" (Madrid, 1588) is purportedly the longest poem ever written in Spanish. Also written in poetic form, his "Historia de Cartagena" is in rhyming eight-line stanzas. (Item ID: 130387)
