New Pamphlet Reproduces text of a lecture given in the 17th century on the various benefits of "exploring, conquering and pacifying the California Provinces." Martinez was influential in the development and design of a notable canal that would drain the area around Huehuetoca. The project lasted 200 years and attracted a number of prominent artists of the colonial era. Martinez was also cosmographer to the king of Spain and interpreter for the Spanish Inquisition. Sources indicate he was of German, Dutch or Spanish descent. This printing by Juan Pascoe's Taller Martin Pescador, published in memory of William Miguel Mathes, a benefactor of the College of Jalisco's library.
