In 1962 Ali Chumacero received a letter from the researcher Seymour Menton; the New York professor proposed the publication of an anthology on Hispanic-American narrative that he himself had prepared based on his academic needs. They never imagined the academic or editorial repercussion of that project, which since its first edition, in 1964 - and until the seventh in 2003 -, has become indispensable in practically all the educational programs that comprise Latin American literature.
