The "Exemplary Novels" published in 1613 constitute, according to the same author, the first example of a short story in Castilian literature, according to the meaning of the word "novel" at that time. Among the 12 that make up the collection there are marked differences; some are close to Italian models, others represent a remarkable deepening both psychological and social as well as stylistic, all are small masterpieces conceived by the genius of Cervantes.
