VIAJE A LA ALCARRIA.

Madrid: Espasa-Calpe (Colección Austral, 1141), 1982. 14th ed. Paperback. 160p., indices, wrps.(vertical crease on front cover). Good. Item #192008

With the backpack on his back and the canteen attached to his belt buckle, the traveler travels the roads and villages of the Alcarria. His is a slow walk, with mornings with a clean atmosphere, hot middays and nights that fall on him, as if frightened. From town to town the traveler lives curious encounters, tiny anecdotes and surprising conversations that he, undaunted, transcribes with a soft prose that combines realism, humor and tenderness. But the journey ends. The traveler left behind the Alcarria with his notes on his back and a bit of sorrow. In exchange, we are left with a book that demonstrates one of Cela's most deeply-rooted affirmations: "The writer, even the most sedentary he may seem, is always an unrepentant vagabond and that is his greatest mark of glory and freedom."
