The study and analysis of the development of tobacco, from a historical point of view on our Island, is one of the topics that Puerto Rican historiography has forgotten. The few studies that do exist are unpublished or are a synthesized analysis that are only used as part of works on economic and general history. We believe that this is one of the first books dedicated to studying the history of tobacco cultivation in its entirety on the Island. To do this, the author uses primary sources from the Archivo de Indias in Seville, as well as secondary works that present the general panorama of the insular economy from the indigenous period to the 18th century. The author's objective is to build a concise vision of the historical panorama of this crop, at the same time, that seeks to offer the internal perspectives and the external effects that affected the cultivation and tobacco trade at its various levels. The local and regional situations that revolved around the particularities of the tobacco product are also presented. The main focus of the work is to publicize, in a general way, the history of tobacco in Puerto Rico.
